The compositions of Biss’s paintings often arise from stories of Indian camp rivalries, midnight raids, the hunt, and severe winters in the Big Horn Mountains. These scenes are then abstracted, taking on a dream-like, abstract quality in which figures and landscape fall into one another. Earl Biss was a major figure in the explosion of Southwestern art that occurred in the second half of the twentieth century and a leader in the rise of contemporary Native American art. He worked on numerous paintings simultaneously—sometimes as many as twenty at once. On October 18, 1998, Biss died from a stroke while in his studio painting. His stylish portraits of Plains Indian horsemen, his deep understanding of the medium of oil paint, and the wild exuberance of his painterly technique have secured Earl Biss a place in canon of American art.
