The compositions of Biss’s paintings often arise from stories of Indian camp rivalries, midnight raids, the hunt, and severe winters in the Big Horn Mountains. These scenes are then abstracted, taking on a dream-like, abstract quality in which figures and landscape fall into one another. Earl Biss was a major figure in the explosion of Southwestern art that occurred in the second half of the twentieth century and a leader in the rise of contemporary Native American art. He worked on numerous paintings simultaneously—sometimes as many as twenty at once.
The 2023 Fall Larsen Art Auction will be held Saturday, October 21st beginning at 10:00 am MST (PDT). All lots are now available to view in person at the Larsen Gallery in Downtown Scottsdale.
