Chihuly, born in 1941, received a degree in design from the University of Washington. He completed his graduate studies in sculpture at the University of Wisconsin and Rhode Island School of Design and, following his formal studies, received a Fulbright Fellowship to study glassblowing in Murano, Italy. Chihuly has been an influential teacher at the Pilchuck Glass School, of which he was a founder, and has been recognized by the American Academy of Achievement, the American Craft Council, and the Institute of International Education. Chihuly has worked on an astonishing number of projects ranging from simple, delicate objects that recall 13th-century Middle Eastern vessels to towering monoliths composed of hundreds of colorful elements.
